    Don't worry, be happy!

    Anne Frank wrote, "We all live with the objective of being happy; our lives are all different, yet the same."

    Professor Dan Bowling, a current member of the Duke Law faculty (and Duke Law alum), takes the idea of happiness and applies it to the legal world in his blog post this week for The Careerist. Professor Bowling offers some good advice to achieve greater well-being, even as a lawyer, and lays out 10 ideas in his article, which can be found here. A brief overview of these novel ideas:

    1) Play to your strengths

    2) Choose optimism

    3) Keep perspective

    4) Keep moving - literally

    5) Be sociable

    6) Practice gratitude

    7) Be resilient

    8) Pause/meditate

    9) Keep a sense of humor

    10) Make law a calling - or get out

    All of these ideas can be transferred to every day life, just as much as your professional life.

    Dinsmore & Shohl, LLP Diversity Scholarship Program

    ELIGIBILITY

    To be awarded a Dinsmore & Shohl LLP Diversity Scholarship, law students must meet the

    following criteria:
    • Applicant must be admitted or already attending an ABA-accredited law school as a first-year or second-year law student.
    • Applicant must have a record of academic or professional achievement.
    • Applicant must display leadership qualities through past work experience, community involvement or student activities.
    • Applicant may not be recipient of a similar scholarship award from another law firm.

    SUMMER CLERKSHIP

    Scholarship recipients will be Summer Associates in one of the Firm’s offices during the summer.

    MENTORS

    Scholarship recipients will be assigned a mentor - a Dinsmore & Shohl LLP lawyer - at the time the scholarship is awarded. The mentor will be available to the Scholar as a dedicated resource to assist with professional development.

    AWARD

    Dinsmore & Shohl LLP will select multiple Scholars who will receive a salaried summer associate position and up to a $10,000.00 scholarship.

    DEADLINES

    First-year law students must submit applications between December 1 and 31.

    Davis Wright Tremaine 1L Diversity Scholarship Program

    We believe that a diverse workforce provides better service to our clients and a better work environment for our attorneys and staff. We have thus made recruitment, retention and promotion of attorneys who add to our overall diversity, including attorneys of color and underrepresented groups, a priority for our firm.
    To help us meet our commitment to diversity, we have established the Davis Wright Tremaine 1L Diversity Scholarship Program. This year, we will offer two scholarships (one position in our Seattle office and one position in our Portland office), which
    consist of a paid Summer Clerkship and $7,500 for the student’s second year tuition
    and expenses.

    Criteria

    The Diversity Scholarships are open to all first-year law students of color, or others of diverse backgrounds, who: Have a record of academic achievement in both undergraduate school and the first year of law school that demonstrates promise for a successful career in law Are committed to civic involvement that promotes diversity and will continue that commitment upon entering the legal profession Will commit to becoming a Summer Associate in our Seattle or Portland Office between their first and second years of law school.

    To Apply

    Please submit the following materials, unstapled and one-sided: Scholarship checklist (see 2nd page) Current resume Copy of your complete undergraduate transcript Copy of your grades from the first semester of law school (if grades are not available by the application deadline, please supplement the application as soon as possible) One-page essay indicating the applicant’s eligibility for and interest in the scholarship Legal writing sample un-edited by a third party List of two or three references, one of whom should be a person qualified to comment on the applicant’s law school work.

    Although demonstrated need may be taken into account, applicants need not disclose their financial circumstances. Applications for the coming year must be received on or before January 20, 2010. Interviews will be scheduled for finalists before scholarships are awarded.

    Harter Secrest & Emery LLP 2010 Diversity Scholarship

    At Harter Secrest & Emery LLP, we are committed to the ongoing development of a diverse work force. We believe that by continuously broadening the diversity of our attorneys that we provide better service to our clients and create a richer work environment. As part of this commitment to diversity, and in an effort to provide students with support in pursuing a law degree, we have established the Harter Secrest & Emery LLP Diversity Scholarship.

    WHAT IS THE HARTER SECREST & EMERY LLP DIVERSITY SCHOLARSHIP?

    The Harter Secrest & Emery LLP Diversity Scholarship was established in 2005. The rm awards two 1L law students with (1) a $7500 scholarship to be applied to the student’s second year tuition and (2) a paid 10-week summer associate position between the student’s rst and second year of law school.

    WHO IS ELIGIBLE FOR THE DIVERSITY SCHOLARSHIP?

    To be eligible for the Diversity Scholarship, the applicant must be a full-time currently enrolled 1L law student who is in good standing at an accredited law school. First year students who are members of racial, ethnic and other minority groups are encouraged to apply.

    WHAT ARE THE SELECTION CRITERIA?

    In addition to the eligibility requirements set forth above, each recipient will be selected on the basis of the following criteria:

    (1) the individual must possess an academic record, interest and capacity that evidence great promise for a successful career during the remainder of law school and in the legal profession; and (2) the individual must contribute to the diversity of the student body at his or her law school.

    Although a disclosure of nancial circumstances is not required, a demonstrated need for nancial assistance may be taken into consideration. The Diversity Scholarship recipients will be chosen based upon the Firm’s review of all scholarship applications and interviews conducted with scholarship nalists.

    Foley Minority Scholarship Program

    A strong and effective diversity program is one of the highest priorities of Foley & Lardner LLP.

    In 1998, we created our Minority Scholarship Program, which exemplifies Foley’s tangible commitment to the advancement of minority law students and to achieving a more diverse legal community.

    Through the program, Foley awards a $5,000 scholarship to a first-year minority law student at select law schools: Berkeley, Duke, Florida, Georgetown, Michigan, Northwestern, UCLA, and Wisconsin. To date, we have awarded nearly $500,000 in scholarships.

    Applications and additional information are available online. Applications must be received by January 19, 2010, and winners will be notified by March 5, 2010.

    Dr. M.L. "Hank" Henry, Jr., Fund for Judicial Internships

    a $4,000 stipdend will be awarded to a qualified law student to support a 10-week summer judicial internship in New York City under the auspices of the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Law Association Foundation of Greater New York ("LeGaL Foundation"). The program will be designed to give the intern exposure to a variety of courts or tribunals. The Fund for Judicial Internships was established in memory of Dr. Henry, whose ground breaking work encouraged openly lesbian and gay lawyers to seek and achieve judicial office in New York City.

    The internship is intended for students with a demonstrated interest in, and commitment to, lesbian, gay bisexual, and transgender rights. The Dr. M.L. "Hank" Henry, Jr., Fund for Judicial Internships values diversity. All interested students are encouraged to apply.

    Applicants for the 2010 summer internship should provide the following information in a letter by email to legal@earthlink.net or by mail to the LeGaL Foundation, 799 Broadway, Suite 340, New York, NY 10003. The application must be received no later than January 4, 2010.

    12th Annual Entertainment Law Initiative Writing Competition and Scholarship Program

    The scholarships are a joint effort of the GRAMMY Foundation and the ABA Forum on Entertainment and Sports Industries intended to provide law students with opportunities in the field of entertainment law.

    Winners of the scholarship have found that the exposure created through the program has aided in career development for years to come. Past winners now work as music and intellectual property lawyers throughout the country.

    The grand prize winner receives a $5,000 scholarship and the four runner-ups each receive $1,000 scholarships. All five winning articles are published in a major law journal. The winners are also flown to Los Angeles where they are honored at the Entertainment Law Initiative Luncheon in front of an audience comprised of some of the top entertainment attorneys in the country. The winners also attend GRAMMY week events including the GRAMMY Awards telecast, and The MusiCares Person of the Year Tribute.

    This is a terrific opportunity and we hope you will participate.

    MCCA AND LEXIS-NEXIS MARTINDALE-HUBBELL COMBINE TO OFFER $15,000 FOR WINNERS OF SPECIAL FELLOWSHIP

    The Minority Corporate Counsel Association (MCCA) has partnered with LexisNexis Martindale-Hubbell (LNMH) to celebrate the launch of the MCCA Community on Martindale-Hubbell Connected by offering two special LexisNexis Martindale-Hubbell Connected Fellowship Awards. Based upon a competitive selection process, MCCA and LNMH will choose two recipients who will each receive a $15,000 fellowship funded through the generosity of LNMH to assist in furthering the educational and professional objectives of two third-year law students (1 male and 1 female) who anticipate graduating from law school in Spring 2010.

    The two $15,000 awards will be presented at the MCCA Diversity Dinner, which will take place in New York City at the Marriott Marquis on November 11, 2009.
